Dump the Pump

Dump the Pump: Thursday, June 21, 2012

CityBus invites the community to “Dump the Pump” and ride free on Thursday, June 21, a day set aside to raise awareness of public transportation’s role in helping people save money and live better. With more than 5.3 million riders last year, CityBus is moving our economy forward by improving the standard of living for transit riders, who are saving about $10,126 per year over the costs of driving a car.

Free Rides for Everybody!

Join our event by riding CityBus FREE--any route, any time, any number of trips--on Thursday, June 21. If you need assistance planning a trip on CityBus, call (765) 742-RIDE, or contact us for travel training.

What Could You Do With an Extra $10,126 a Year?

Think about how much your car costs when you include the car payment, insurance, maintenance, fuel, and parking. The national average is $10,126 a year (Source: Transit Savings Report from the American Public Transportation Association). Consider this. If yours is a typical two-car family, the second car is used mostly just to get to and from work. Riding public transit for work trips can acheive a savings of $10,126 a year if you get rid of the second car. If you work at Purdue or Ivy Tech, rides on CityBus are free, so you could save even more. What could you do with that much money? Here are some ideas, and we're sure you can think of others!

  • Save for retirement--or even retire early.

  • Save for college.

  • Take a European vacation or 10-day cruise--every summer!

  • Pay off your mortgage early.
